A RANGERS fan from Hawick has been warned he faces a prison sentence after admitting singing sectarian songs and making racist comments.

Jamie Gent, 26, was heading home in the Wilton Hill area of the Borders town on Sunday night when he was detained by police.

He had earlier watched his team lose 2-0 on television to arch-rivals Celtic in the semi-finals of the Scottish League Cup at Hampden Park.

Gent appeared from custody at Selkirk Sheriff Court still wearing a Rangers red away strip and pleaded guilty to a charge of behaving in a threatening or abusive manner.

He admitted singing sectarian songs, making racist comments and threatening police with violence shortly after 11pm.

Gent of Fairhurst Drive, Hawick, pleaded guilty to a second charge of struggling violently with two police constables in Hawick Police Station.

Sheriff Peter Paterson told him: “These are serious offences. This sort of thing is not common in the Borders. It is a nonsense which will not be tolerated.

“I have to consider all options including a custodial sentence to set an example to society.” Sentence was deferred until March 9 at Jedburgh Sheriff Court for background reports to be prepared and Gent was released on bail.
