LOCAL cyclist Kevin Welsh celebrated his 50th birthday with a touch of fundraising.

And his efforts have led to both the Borders Search and Rescue Unit as well as the British Heart Foundation both benefitting.

Earlier this month the lead coach with Kelso Wheelers asked his friends and family to make a donation to his chosen good causes rather than splash out on a gift.

Kevin, who is also a mountain bike guide, told us: “There are a number of people close to me that suffer from heart conditions and I would like to offer some help.

"I have also been grateful for the first aid support provided at local cycling events by members of the rescue team and you never know when they might be needed when cycling in the Cheviots.”

This Kevin handed over cheques for just over £300 to Lynn Young from the British Heart Foundation and Ian Stark of the BSRU.

Lynn said “We are very grateful for this donations and the money will help fund research into cures for those that suffer from heart conditions.”

Border Search and Rescue Unit are using the donation to buy ten special LED torches, which are essential for search operations in the winter.

Ian said: “We would like to thank Kev for providing these torches for the team.

"As winter approaches, we spend more time working in the dark and powerful torches make up an essential item of personal kit.

"We rely on donations to provide a rescue service in our area.”
