THE cameras will still roll this weekend at Melrose Sevens, despite the BBC camera tower being stolen.

Thieves targeted the Greenyards ahead of Saturday"s 126th sevens tournament, stealing around £600 of scaffolding equipment from a tower used by the BBC to transmit live rugby action from the event.

Police are now looking for information regarding the theft, believed to have taken place between last Wednesday, April 1, and Monday, April 6.

The large time scale is said to be making investigations difficult, but officers now plan to scour CCTV images in an attempt to catch the criminals.

It is a disappointing blow for organisers who are preparing for thousands of visitors to the town this weekend.

Organiser Douglas Hardie said: 'It"s very upsetting that we have people within our midst who would commit this crime.'

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Melrose police station on 01896 822602.
