Countdown to New Year begins in Melrose
IT is believed to be the biggest New Year street party in the Borders.
But it hit the headlines last year when it was suggested that attempts could be made to limit the number of people who attend the annual festivities and fireworks display in Melrose on Hogmanay.
A crowd of more than 2000 people converged on the clock in the Square in 2010.
But, despite some concerns over a lack of toilet facilities and underage drinking, community councillors, who helped organise the New Year celebrations, have vowed to continue with the event this year. And they revealed everyone was welcome.
Provost William Windram, who revealed the event cost around £1800 to stage, is appealing for volunteers to help with a street collection on the night, as well as the appointment of a designated first aider.
