Fireworks expected in Melrose at New Year
FIREWORKS are expected at the New Year street party in Melrose this year.
More than 1000 revellers are expected to attend the event under the clock in the Square on Saturday, December 31.
It is believed to be the biggest Hogmanay party in the Borders.
The annual festivities and fireworks display cost £1800 to stage. But collection cans have been left around the town and a street collection will be taken on the night to help pay for the 2012 celebrations.
Melrose Provost William Windram said: "We're expecting another jolly good display."
Last year the event hit the headlines when it was suggested that attempts could be made to limit the number of people who attend the event.
A crowd of more than 2000 people converged on the clock in the Square in 2010.
But, despite some concerns over a lack of toilet facilities and underage drinking, community councillors, who helped organise the New Year celebrations, have vowed to continue with the event this year. And they revealed everyone was welcome.
Local residents are advised not to park their car in the Square in Melrose after noon on Saturday to allow for preparations to be made. The road will be closed to traffic between 11.15pm and 1am.

Report comment"...jolly good display". Says it all really. Melrosians pretending to be posh again in one of the poorest areas of Scotland. Champagne lifestyle on bucks fizz wages. Edinburgh is where the real money is and also a proper fireworks display.
