A FORMER Earlston High School pupil is preparing to move to Berlin - after being signed up by a top record label.

Talented techno DJ Nick Dow from Darnick made his name after playing on the Borders club scene.

And he revealed that he only took up mixing after he salvaged his sister's decks that she was throwing out - five years ago.

Nick told the Border Telegraph: "I started out mixing cheesy house music, some hip-hop and the occasional drum'n'bass record that I got from my friends. A year or so later, I was introduced to music production and DJ software. When I figured out that I could produce and play my music all on a computer, I never looked back."

And now he's getting ready to move permanently to what's considered to be one of the music capitals of the world.

He added: "I'm moving to Berlin because it's like the Mecca for electronic music. I want to be surrounded by other people doing the same thing as me. From what I've experienced, it's an incredibly creative city and it seems like the perfect place to develop my skills and career."

One of the 22-year-old's first gigs was closer to home - at Move nightclub in Galashiels.

"They were some good memories because they were the first times I got to hear my music through a proper sound system. I didn't really have a clue what I was doing but I had a lot of fun.

"Obviously my productions weren't great when I was first starting out but I didn't know any better and was completely care free. Looking back I can't believe some of the music I used to play but people still seemed to dance and that was enough motivation for me to carry on."

Last year things started to change for the better as he was signed to record label Pulsewith Records after sending away demo after demo, He added: "I spent the best part of a year sending away hundreds of demos and emails to different labels around the world. After what felt like endless rejection I finally got the attention of a small but prestigious label from Barcelona.

"It has been a big step for me being able to sell my music and has helped me gain a lot more exposure as an artist."

And to celebrate his first release, Nick was flown over to gig in Barcelona - the best experience of his musical career so far.

After releasing two tracks he has a third coming out this month.
