Borders cable thief jailed

A DONCASTER man who stole copper cable worth more than £4500 from the British Telecom yard in Galashiels has been jailed for four months.

Richard Chadbourne had just been jailed for six months at Ayr Sheriff Court in October for a similar offence when he admitted stealing five drums of copper cable in the Huddersfield Street compound earlier that month.

He also admitted forcing open the same Galashiels compound in May 2007 and moving seven drums of copper cable.

The case called at Selkirk Sheriff Court on Monday when it was revealed the 38-year-old was due to be released from prison next week.

Sheriff Kevin Drummond said it was unfortunate both cases could not have been handled together back in October .

But with the amount of cable stolen totalling £10,000 he had to add four months to Chadbourne"s sentence.
