BORDERS police are appealing for witnesses following a serious assault in Peebles.

The incident happened around 1.40am on Sunday, September 11 outside The County Bar on the High Street. 

A 49-year-old man challenged three males about their behaviour towards his wife while they had all been inside the bar, at which point the group attacked him. 

As a result, the victim sustained serious facial injuries and was taken to Borders General Hospital where he continues to be treated. 

Officers are currently following a positive line of inquiry, but are keen to speak with anyone who can assist with their ongoing inquiries. 

Detective Constable Callum Peoples from Galashiels CID said: "The victim has sustained a number of painful injuries to his face during the attack, which we believe was witnessed by a number of people.

“We are actively pursuing various lines of inquiry to trace those responsible and anyone with information relevant to this ongoing investigation is asked to contact police immediately."
