CLOUDY skies couldn"t stop the Big Weekend Festival in Galashiels from being a clear success.

Over 4000 people flocked to Netherdale on Saturday and Sunday to enjoy the biggest music festival in the Borders.

And despite bad weather on the Sunday, organiser, Iain Burke, says the event was a runaway success.

He said: 'It went very well. It was a great weekend despite the weather on Sunday.

'Saturday was absolutely fantastic. It was gorgeous weather, and everyone that I spoke to had a great day. It was a real success.'

And with a heavyweight line-up including rock legends Deacon Blue and the Saw Doctors, Mr Burke believes the festival can go from strength to strength.

He said: 'There were different highlights for different people, but I think having two big bands like Deacon Blue and the Saw Doctors was a highlight. It is pretty spectacular for the Borders.

'We think it was a successful weekend and we are grateful for all the support we had from our sponsors. We are looking forward to next year.'

Mr Burke also thinks the event benefited from the carnival atmosphere already buzzing round the town from the morning"s Braw Lads" Gathering ceremonials.

He said: 'Because it is in the afternoon, it adds to the day. It is probably the biggest day in the Galashiels calendar, and it adds something that wasn"t there before.

'Once the formal ceremonies are over there is nothing else on, so I think it fills a gap in the day.'
