I'm not going to replace Ming, says Moore

THE Borders" Lib-Dem MP will not enter the race to become the next leader of the party.

Michael Moore who said he was 'saddened and shocked' at the resignation of Sir Menzies Campbell on Monday, ruled himself out of the running to replace him.

He told the Border Telegraph: 'I"m flattered that you have asked me if I"m standing, but I will be backing Nick Clegg who is our Home Affairs spokesman.'

The Berwickshire, Roxburgh and Selkirk member paid tribute to Sir Ming, whose decision to quit leaves the Lib-Dems looking for their third leader in two years.

Mr Moore said: 'Ming has contributed an enormous amount to the development of our party over a very long period of time, but particularly over the past couple of years.

'He has shown great political courage throughout his career and has made an immense contribution to British politics. He leaves an important political legacy for all of us and, in particular, the next leader.

'As a friend, I believe that his immense abilities, selflessness and dignity are hallmarks which are all too rarely found in public life.'

Catriona Bhatia, the Lib-Dem representative for Tweeddale West on Scottish Borders Council, was also shocked by Sir Ming"s resignation.

She said: 'I was really surprised when I heard - it was quite unexpected.

'I would like to see a female candidate in the leadership race as there are a number of strong women MPs who could put themselves forward.'

Mr Moore will be welcoming the Sir Menzies and Lady Campbell to the Borders this weekend.

They are expected to watch the Hawick v. Melrose rugby match on Saturday, while Sir Menzies is due to speak at the Lib-Dems" annual dinner in Clovenfords that evening.
