THOUSANDS of Borderers turned up recently to see the Galashiels Christmas lights being switched on.
Despite fears that national supermarket chains would take the sparkle out of the festive season, fireworks illuminated the sky.
This year"s Braw Lass Amy Quinn and former Braw Lad and Lass David Anderson and Tracey Borthwick pressed the button to switch on the town"s impressive Christmas lights.
Chairman of Gala Chamber of Trade said: 'The crowds gathered in Bank Street Gardens to watch the event and it was a really good atmosphere.
'The fireworks and Christmas lights were impressive despite the fact that most of the multiples (national shop chains) have not been forthcoming in their contribution towards the community lights.
'Perhaps when the multiples see how much better the increase in their trading figures were on Saturday, they might want to join the likes of the Lothian & Borders Co-op and Specsavers in donating money back into the community for our Christmas celebrations.'
Around 3000 from across the Borders turned up for the festive spectacle, which marks the beginning of the Galashiels Christmas season.
