IT"S written in the town"s history books that because of something which happened hundreds of years ago the people of Galashiels now have permission to stage a midsummer fair each year.

But when did they ever need an invitation to party?

Hundreds of well-wishers, or revellers perhaps, young and old alike, once again turned out in support of the annual Braw Lads" Gathering in Galashiels on Saturday.

It was the culmination of a week of festivities.

And, for Braw Lad Jamie Hind and Braw Lass Lauren Horsburgh, it was arguably the proudest day of their lives.

(Make sure you buy a copy of this week's Border Telegraph - out on Wednesday - for the best and most extensive coverage of the Braw Lad's Gathering 2008)
