MORE than 50 local jobs will be shed in the coming weeks, as the recession hits the Borders' manufacturing industry.
Jedburgh Kiltmaker's Ltd was the first to announce the job cuts, as the factory prepares to close its doors by the end of the week.
The shock announcement that the 31-strong workforce will be let go before the weekend has left the Border town reeling, with local MP Michael Moore describing the closure as a 'bitter blow' to the area and the region's economy.
And Barrie Knitwear today confirmed that 19 jobs will go at its factory in Hawick.
MSP John Lamont told the Border Telegraph: "Coupled with the devastating news yesterday that Jedburgh Kiltmakers are to close with the loss of 31 jobs, this is another huge blow for the Borders economy.
'There is a black cloud hanging over the Borders.'
'As well as speaking to the management of the company, I have also spoken to union representatives this morning (Wednesday)and I know that they are concerned about a number of other firms in the Borders.
"Action must be taken quickly to ensure that the workers affected are given every possible assistance in seeking alternative employment."
