LAUDER Cornet Jon Threadgall has been nominated for a national hero award after pulling two people from a burning car minutes before it exploded.

The Border Telegraph revealed how the 26-year-old brewery account manager, left, was travelling South on the A9 road near Aviemore when he witnessed the two-car smash in June last year.

And, after spotting smoke coming from one of the vehicles, he leapt into action, disregarding his own safety and pulling the trapped passengers from the burning wreckage.

His actions have now been recognised by the Fire Fighters Charity, who have selected Jon as one of four finalists from all across the UK in the Public Adult Hero category for this year"s Spirit of Fire Awards.

The awards, now in their fifth year, look to honour the brave men and women of the UK fire service and public, and will culminate in a star-studded ceremony to be held at London"s Wembley stadium next month.

Jon told the Border Telegraph: 'It"s definitely an honour to be nominated. Each and every person there has gone above and beyond the call of duty.

'I"m looking forward to the ceremony in London, although it"s Lauder picking night the next day (May 8) so I"ll be flying straight home after the awards!'

Chris Burghes, the Firefighters Charity Business Development Director, said: 'A firefighter is regularly exposed to dangerous and life threatening incidents.

'Jon is not a firefighter but he didn"t think twice about his actions. His story is one of outstanding bravery.

'He is a selfless individual and we are honoured that he is representing the Public Adult Hero Category at The Firefighters Charity Spirit of Fire Awards 2009.'

The Firefighters Charity provides treatment and support for firefighters injured while on duty.
