LOCALS have been warned not to be taken in by bogus callers who are phoning Borders residents claiming to be from the Citizen's Advice Bureau.

Fraudsters have contacted a number of residents in the Selkirk area over the past few weeks, posing as government officials and asking for information on unsecured loans.

Central Borders CAB Manager Heather Smith told the Border Telegraph: "We've heard now from quite a few people that they have been receiving these calls over the last few weeks.

"We can say categorically that there is no such government initiative at the moment, and whoever is making these calls is not doing so on behalf of either the government or the CAB or any recognised advice agency.

"Our advice to local people is to have nothing to do with them - and indeed to report such calls either to ourselves or to Trading Standards."

"We are very concerned that the callers might be offering loans, or might be trying to get people to give confidential bank details over the phone."

She added: "If in doubt, people should contact us at the CAB. That's what we are here for."
