Absolute discharge

A SELF-employed agricultural worker who seized his ex-partner by the shoulders and pulled her into the home they once shared after she came round to collect her belongings walked free from court after a Sheriff heard she took five days to report the incident to police.

Stephen Robinson, 25, of Main Street, Melrose, admitted assaulting Emma Davidson at Hazel Cottage East, Lilliesleaf, on September 10.

He told police he pulled her into the house because she seemed to be "dilly-dallying". However, at Selkirk Sheriff Court on Monday, he admitted he regretted the incident.

Sheriff Kevin Drummond noted Robinson was a first offender and gave him an absolute discharge. He also ordered that his guns, seized by police following the incident, be returned.

Shoplifter awaits sentence

A SHOPLIFTER caught stealing a digital camera from a supermarket in Galashiels will have to wait until next year to be sentenced.

Laura Lee, 23, of Church Square, admitted the theft at the town's Tesco on August 30.

However, her co-accused, Christopher Riach, 26, also of Church Square, Galashiels, denied the charge at Selkirk Sheriff Court on Monday. His case was continued to trial on May 11 with a preliminary hearing on April 12.

Sheriff Kevin Drummond deferred sentence on Lee until that date.

Riach was released on bail with the special condition that he does not attempt to enter the store.

Thief's Christmas present

A COMPULSIVE thief who stole a DVD player while Christmas shopping in Galashiels just weeks after being released early from a prison sentence for shoplifting has been warned he will be locked up for "a significant period" if he reoffends.

Heroin addict James Calder, 30, of Halliburton Place, admitted the offence when he appeared from custody at Selkirk Sheriff Court on Monday.

He also admitted threatening to break the nose of a police officer after being arrested for the theft on Saturday (October 31).

Calder's solicitor Iain Burke, who revealed his client was attempting to turn his life around and get free of drugs having enrolled on a methadone programme, said: "This was a ridiculous, opportunistic theft and he can't believe he has done it." But he added: "He had no intention of carrying out his threat."

Sheriff Kevin Drummond deferred sentence on Calder for eight months to get clean and prove he can behave.

Galashiels man 'exposed'

A 43-YEAR-OLD man is alleged to have grabbed a woman on the arm and exposed himself at the bus station in Galashiels.

Terence Moore, of Laurel Grove, denied the charges at Selkirk Sheriff Court on Monday.

He is accused of conducting himself in a disorderly manner on September 2. It is alleged he grabbed a woman on the arm to her alarm and, in a separate charge, exposed himself in public.

Sheriff Kevin Drummond continued the case to trial next year, with a preliminary hearing on March 15.

Pervert justice charge

A PENSIONER denied attempting to pervert the course of justice when he appeared in court this week.

John Hanson, 69, is alleged to have caused Christopher McLear to enter his home in Wood Street, Galashiels, on October 9 - despite knowing him to be subject to bail conditions set at Selkirk Sheriff Court not to enter that address, dating back to July 20.

And he was accused of doing so with the intent of perverting the course of justice.

Sheriff Kevin Drummond continued the case to trial on May 11 with a preliminary hearing on April 12.

Lindean crash charge

A 27-YEAR-OLD man accused of overtaking in the face of oncoming traffic and colliding with another vehicle, injuring the driver, appeared in court this week.

Saulrus Freitakas, of Green Terrace, Hawick, denied driving dangerously on the A7 at Lindean on November 29, when he appeared at Selkirk Sheriff Court on Monday.

His case was continued to trial on November 17.
