ICE and snow is forecast for the Borders over New Year coupled with strong winds for the next two days and temperatures reaching down to minus five degrees.
Scottish Borders Council (SBC) insists it will be doing everything it can to mitigate the effect of the weather on the road network.
However, despite these efforts, the low temperatures will make travel very dangerous.
Drivers are being warned not to undertake any journeys unless they are absolutely essential.
Given the severity of the forecast, the Council's priority for treatment has to be given to Trunk and A roads.
Conditions on minor roads will be very difficult. Drivers should expect hard packed snow on these roads, with the possibility of drifting snow on top.
Only absolutely essential travel should be undertaken in vehicles able to cope with the difficult conditions, and drivers should take with them supplies of additional warm clothing, food and hot drinks, and other emergency supplies.
