A CONVICTED drug user from Hawick has scooped a quarter of a million pounds with a scratchcard.
Gerry Donaldson from Hawick has been unemployed for 10 years after getting injured on a building site.
The 39-year-old has been convicted of drug offences four times - although he insists he uses cannabis for pain relief.
His most recent appearance at Jedburgh Sheriff Court in November saw him fined £400.
He had been found in possession of £290 worth of the drug when his house was raided by police last May.
Despite his criminal record, his lawyer told the court Mr Donaldson had no intention of stopping using the drug, explaining he relied on it for pain relief.
Mr Donaldson is expected to receive £250,000 into his bank account from the National Lottery after announcing his win on Facebook.

Oh, well he shouldn't need extra time to pay any possible fines in the future.I suspect some of his detractors (of which, presumably, there are some) will be cracking up with moral indignation. But if this unexpected windfall helps straighten out Mr Donaldson's life, good luck to him.Chronic, never-ending pain is very debilitating. No one should have to suffer.
