SCOTTISH Conservative Leader Annabel Goldie MSP visited the Borders to give her backing to John Lamont in the run up to the General Election this year.

She visited the MSP for Roxburgh and Berwickshire in Hawick which has been left reeling from a series of redundancies in the textile industry in the past 12 months.

Commenting during the visit, Ms Goldie said: "I am delighted to be able to visit the Borders with John Lamont and to have the opportunity to meet local people in the Borders.

"John has proven himself to be an extremely hard-working MSP and is well known for standing up for the interests of the Borders. I know he would make a first class MP for the area.

"As I travel around the country, it is increasingly clear to me that people are crying out for a change in Government. With the election being a clear choice between Gordon Brown's Labour Party and David Cameron's Conservatives, voters in the Borders have a real chance to influence who forms the next Government. A vote for any other party risks stopping the change which our country needs."

Mr Lamont said: "I am pleased that Annabel Goldie has come to the Borders to see for herself the challenges our area is facing. I know that she was particularly concerned by how many empty shops there are along some of our high streets.

"However, I know she was impressed by the resilience and determination of everyone in the Borders to come through the current economic difficulties.

"She was also left in no doubt that Hawick needs a new Government as much as the rest of the country."
