SNP MSP Christine Grahame has condemned the decision by Scottish Borders Council to scrap its disabled sports officer post in its spending programme.
Ms Grahame, who chairs the Parliament's Health and Sport Committee, has lodged a Parliamentary Motion after it was announced funding for the post, held by multi-award-winning local man Jed Renilson, would be stopped in May in order to save £27,000 from the community services section of the education budget.
She said: "I think this is a terrible decision by the council particularly as Mr Renilson has won numerous awards while in post and the amount of work that has been done in the Borders in promoting sport for disabled youngsters and adults.
"The decision by the Liberal, Conservative and Independent Councillors on SBC undermines sports development in the the Scottish Borders especially amongst disabled athletes and sportspeople."
Ms Grahame said that regardless of whether Mr Renilson was content to leave his job the position of Disability Sports Development Officer was one that should be retained.
She added: "I would urge the council to reconsider its decision in light of the exemplary work and benefit local disabled sportspeople have derived from Mr Renilson's dedicated efforts."
