SCOTTISH Borders Council leader David Parker will officially open the new post office in Newtown St Boswells next week.

The newly opened service in the council headquarters, is the first in

Scotland to be run from a local authority building.

However, last week we reported that it would only be open for a total of eight hours a week - compared to the previous service in the village newsagents which was open for more than 70 hours.

The council will be responsible for running the premises and the service

will continue to be provided by subpostmistress Lynn Ferguson and her team

from nearby Denholm Post Office.

Meanwhile, the Post Office in Clovenfords is also on the move.

Following the end of the formal period of public consultation, the Mobile Post Office service will move 190 yards away from the current site at Millbank Road to Clovenfords Hotel car park.

It followed complaints that residents were being forced to dodge cars on a road with no pavements to deliver letters.

Brian Turnbull, Field Change Advisor, Post Office Ltd, said: "Our priority

is to safeguard Post Office services to the local community in the longer

term. The decision to relocate the Mobile Post Office service to a new

location is designed to secure continued access for our customers to Post

Office services well into the future.

"The facilities and service that we provide to our customers is of

paramount importance and we are confident that our customers will benefit,

in the longer term, by this change."
