HEALTH chiefs have denied lives are being put at risk despite announcing plans to cut almost 100 jobs in the Borders over the next year.
NHS Borders published its workforce projections which set out the impact of the spending cuts on jobs.
Doctors, nurses, midwives and physiotherapists are among those whose posts will be axed.
However, with a total of 96 posts under-threat in the Borders, the local health board, which employs more than 3000 workers, insisted patient care will not be affected and assured staff there will be no compulsory redundancies.
Calum Campbell, Chief Executive of NHS Borders, said: "Like all boards, NHS Borders faces the challenge of making the best use of limited resources while improving the quality of services we provide.
"We have worked in partnership to produce and submit outline workforce projections to the Government as requested. These projections estimate that NHS Borders workforce will reduce by 96 WTE (whole time equivalent) over the financial year 2010/11.
"We are currently looking at natural turnover, greater controls of vacancies, agency/bank use and temporary posts to meet these challenges.
"These steps are intended to protect our permanent employees and to sustain services. We will continue working in partnership to ensure high quality, sustainable and safe patient care."
