SCOTTISH Borders Council (SBC) is flying the flag of Armed Forces Day this week to honour the work of our Armed Forces and as a mark of homage to those who have given their lives in the service of their country.

The Government has set the Saturday closest to 27 June as Armed Forces Day and has asked all councils to fly the flag in recognition of the role played by servicemen and women past and present.

SBC Convener, Alasdair Hutton, who served as a volunteer soldier mainly with the Scottish TA Battalion of the Parachute Regiment, said: "Scottish Borders Council has been proud to play its part in recognising our servicemen and women in previous years and is proud to fly the flag again this year."

Events planned during Armed Forces Week include a talk on 'Stress in Combat' by Colonel Clive Fairweather, a former Commanding Officer of the King's Own Scottish Borderers, on Wednesday 23 June at 7.30 pm in the Kelso branch of the Royal British Legion Scotland and the annual concert of Music for Heroes at the Tait Hall in Kelso at 7.30 pm on Saturday 26 June.

"This year celebrates the 150th anniversary of the Cadet Movement in Britain," said Alasdair, who will introduce the items, "so the emphasis will be on our talented young performers."

Tickets priced at £2.50 each are on sale at Kelso Library and will be available at the door.
