The new school in Lauder has made the site of the old school surplus to requirements.
PLANS to build a dozen new family homes on the site of the former Lauder Primary School have been revealed.
Eildon Housing want to erect the four and five-bedroom rentable properties on the council-owned site.
Members of the local authority executive yesterday (Tuesday) approved a finance package to help the social landlord meet the £235,000 asking price for the site.
Gerry Beggs, housing strategy manager at Scottish Borders Council, said: "Following several unsuccessful attempts to secure a site for affordable housing in Lauder, council officers and Eildon Housing Association have identified the council-owned former Lauder Primary School as a development opportunity.
"A feasibility study has indicated that the site could provide 12 four and five apartment family houses."
Executive members agreed to use £110,000 from its Affordable Housing Investment budget to prop up Eildon's own £125,000 for the site.
The total project is expected to cost £1.73 million, which will be made up from £930,248 of Scottish Government grants, private borrowing and the Council's £110,000.

As a middle class person who lives in Lauder I'm disgusted at this proposal. Lauder is no place for the low life that are going to occupy these houses. It's a quiet place full of professional commuters who have enhanced the town and we don't want to see people from that class here. What are SBC/Eildon playing at? Could they not just extend Langlee where their relations are staying anyway? No doubt the crime rate will rise and their kids will have a bad influence on our young ones. Go back to Langlee where you belong. Besides Langlee is closer to the dole office.
