AIRFIELDS in the Borders are to be used for a major training exercise by the air force this month.
RAF Kinloss will host of the two-week flying course to prepare RAF crews for operations overseas and in the UK between July 5 and 15.
It will involve almost a thousand air force personnel and 70 aircraft - including the RAF's latest Typhoon fast jet.
However, the flying activity will take place away from RAF Kinloss and will involve low-level flying throughout Scotland, particularly over target zones to simulate ground attack scenarios in Afghanistan.
And the Ministry of Defence has revealed aircraft activity can be expected at Charterhall airfield and Fans Hill near Duns, and Lanton Hill near Jedburgh.
A spokesman for the Royal Air Force said: "We appreciate that the course can cause noise and inconvenience for some people in Scotland and will do all we can to minimise that by restricting most of the flying to weekday afternoons.
"Out of hours flying has been authorised and noise disturbance may be experienced in some locations."
But he added: "All personnel involved with the exercise will be briefed on the requirement to avoid disturbance to livestock and damage to property together with the procedures for reporting incidents and complaints."
