A BUTCHER from the Borders has proved a cut above after his bangers were once again voted the best in Scotland.

Craig Douglas, of J C Douglas Quality Butchers, of Main Street, St Boswells, has been crowned champion at this year's Scottish Beef Sausage Championship organised by the Scottish Federation of Meat Traders Associations.

He already holds the award for the best pork sausages in the country.

But now they are believed to be the first butchers in the Borders, if not the whole of Scotland, to hold both titles at the same time.

Craig, who has won a series of awards since taking over the shop three years ago, said: "I am over the moon.

"I was ecstatic to hold both regional titles following the local heats earlier this year." But he added: "It's great to be recognised at a national level - and it helps to put St Boswells on the map."

A mystery shopper bought beef bangers from the Borders butchers before testing them against the top two from the other four regions of Scotland. And a panel of experts at the Braehead Cook School in Kilmarnock decided who has the best butcher's beef sausages in Scotland for 2010.

Craig, who revealed his most popular sausage was the St Boswells banger, will now travel south for the Champion of Champions event at Butchers Hall in London on October 25, where his beef sausage will be judged against other bangers from across the UK.
