A BARN Owl is on the road to recovery after being found covered in motor oil in the Borders.

The bird, which has been named Castrol, is currently being cared for at Arthurshiel Animal Rescue Centre in St Boswells.

He is said to be lucky to be alive after being found on a road side near Kelso on Thursday.

Centre manager Shona Middlemas, who slammed the twits who dumped the oil, said: “We were worried at first that he had maybe taken some in when cleaning himself. It also prevented him from keeping himself warm.”

But she added: “Now the oil is coming out of him, he’s eating well and starting to get his strength back - although he will need another bath.”

Castrol is not the first Barn Owl the centre has cared for. However, his appearance has ruffled a few feathers.

Shona said: “His appearance is a wee bit of a mystery. We’ve had a few barn owls last winter because the snow was so deep they couldn’t find food.” But she added: “We are hoping he will make a full recovery.”
