WHAT'S in a name? Quite a lot if you are about to become a mum or dad.
And this year proud parents in the Borders have opted mostly for Alexander and Sophie. A total of 12 new Alexanders arrived in the region this year with 11 Sophies.
Archie (11), Finlay (11), Jack (11) and Oliver (11) were the equal joint second most popular boys name. And there were ten Lewis and Rileys. Harry (8), James (8), Charlie (7), Ethan (7), Joshua (7), Logan (7) and Ryan (7) complete the Borders chart for 2011.
Sophie was closely followed by Lily (10) and Maisie (10) with Chloe (9) in fourth.
Borders parents chose Ava, Emily and Jessica eight times. And the girls names chart was completed with Emma (7), Isabella (7), Ellie (6), Erin (6), Grace (6), Isla (6), Lucy (6) and Mia (6).
The most popular boys name in Scotland was Jack, followed by Lewis and James. And the nation's favourite girls name of 2011 was Sophie, from Lily and Ava.
A total of three bundles of joy arrived at Borders General Hospital on Christmas Day this year. All mums and babies are reported to be doing well following the Sunday births.
Amongst the three happy mums was Lara Hogg, from Hawick, who welcomed baby Karis into the world at 12.24pm. Karis, pictured, weighed in at a healthy 6 pounds and 13 ounces. We have respected the other two mothers' wishes for no publicity.
