Melrose fire sale hits legal hitch
UNCERTAINTY continues to surround the future of the former fire station in Melrose.
The High Street building, which overlooks the Greenyards, was put up for sale by Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service Board after the station closed following a review of the fire service in 2007.
And, in August last year, the Border Telegraph reported that talks were being held over its potential sale.
Local Councillor John Paton-Day, a member of the fire board, reported there had been a "slight hitch" in the legal process at a meeting of Melrose and District Communuity Council last month.
However, he said he was confident the sale would still go ahead.
Community councillors heard local speculation had linked the Co-op supermarket and Melrose Rugby Club as the potential new owners of the site.
But the Co-op was ruled out at the meeting. And, this week, Melrose Rugby Club insisted they were not the interested party - although they confirmed they are looking for a new site to extend their gym.
