Roads in Melrose safer than ever
POLICE have revealed the number of road accidents in Melrose have been almost halved since the introduction of the town's one-way system.
PC John Dawson made the revelation following concerns over the speed of traffic in the town centre.
Last month we reported a drive has been launched to curb the speed of traffic in Melrose.
It followed a claim from local residents that some motorists had turned the one-way system in Melrose into a race track.
They claimed they were being forced to take their lives in their hands when attempting to cross the road and called for various traffic calming measures including a reduction in the speed limit from 30mph to 20mph.
However, this week, PC Dawson revealed there had been 42 collisions recorded in Melrose between 2001 and 2006 when the new one-way system was first piloted, compared to just 26 since.
He said: "The roads are far safer in Melrose since the introduction of a one-way system."
Meanwhile, elsewhere, community councillors heard concerns over the newly revamped junction at Borders General Hospital after two accidents were reported in two days last week.
