THE best-kept secret in Melrose is out.

Twenty-year-old Graham Crawford has been unveiled as this year's Melrosian.

His appointment was announced at the Ex-Melrosians Burns Supper at the Greenyards on Saturday evening.

However, the keen sportsman, who is studying sport and exercise at Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen, admitted he had known of his appointment for some time and revealed the public announcement this week came as a relief - because it meant he could finally share his excitement with friends and family.

The former Earlston High School pupil, who has played rugby for Melrose and Robert Gordon University, revealed his first involvement with the Melrose Festival was as a Herald, part of the Queen's Court, while in primary seven at Melrose Grammar School a decade ago.

And, last year, he followed the event from start to finish in support of his good friend Rhuaridh Nairn, the 2011 Melrosian.

Speaking to the Border Telegraph, Graham, whose brother David Crawford was Melrosian in 2006, said: "I am honoured to be chosen as the Melrosian for 2012.

"I am really looking forward to the support, getting on a horse and representing the town in the year ahead."
