Pensioners make a date with destiny in Galashiels
Dick Kyle and Amelia Robertson, of Cornmill Court, Galashiels, prepare for the forthcoming speed-dating sessions.
PENSIONERS are being invited to attend the first speed dating event of its kind in the Borders.
Galashiels Older Persons Group has organised the match-making phenomenon for local care home residents in the town's Volunteer Hall on Friday, February 10, from 1pm to 4pm.
It has been billed as the highlight to their free tea dance which, according to the programme, boasts "an afternoon of friendly discussion, fun and entertainment!"
However, with local politicians, council officials and police also planning to attend the event to answer their questions, some residents could end up going home with more than they bargained for.
Organiser Julie Pearson, a Supported Housing Co-ordinator at Cornmill Court sheltered housing complex in St John Street, Galashiels, told the Border Telegraph: "It's the first time we have done anything like this.
"We've lined up special guests, including Christine Grahame MSP, to move around the tables and talk to residents to tell them more about the services available to them and allow them to ask any questions in return.
"Although it is designed to allow residents to get as much information as they can in a short space of time, it will be just like speed dating. And, with a number of them already signed up, it really seems to have captured the imagination."
And she added: "It's fun because they all think they might just find someone to take home."
