SCOTLAND rugby star Chris Paterson could have a street named after him in his hometown of Galashiels.
Local housing developer Tweed Homes suggested the special tribute in recognition of the country's record points and caps holder ahead of the opening of its new 26 home development at Balnakiel this summer.
It follows his retirement from international rugby last month.
Community councillors heard two possible names have been put forward for streets on the new housing estate - Chris Paterson Place and Chris Paterson Gardens.
And, if they are approved by Scottish Borders Council, it will be the latest honour to be bestowed on the former Galashiels Academy pupil, who kicked off his career at his hometown club, Gala.
He was made an MBE in the Queen's New Year's honours list.
Tweed Homes managing director Andy Pearson, whose firm sponsor Peebles Rugby Club, explained: "Chris Paterson has been a tremendous ambassador for Galashiels and we felt it would be nice to recognise his incredible achievements."
The development in Galashiels, which is due to be completed in June, is one of the first of its kind in Scotland.
The homes will be let on short assured tenancies for below-market rent then sold in five to 10 years with tenants offered the first opportunity to buy. And the proceeds of the sales will repay the funds used to build the houses.
Scottish Housing Minister Keith Brown visited the Borders to launch the National Housing Trust scheme in August last year.
Meanwhile, Scottish fans got the chance to say goodbye to Paterson prior to their opening Six Nations match against England at Murrayfield on Saturday.
The Borderer, who made his Scotland debut against Spain at Murrayfield during the 1999 World Cup, won a record 109 caps, scoring 809 points, over 12 years.
However, the fans favourite, who turns 34 in March, will continue to play for his club, Edinburgh Rugby, for the remainder of his contract, which concludes at the end of this season, although he does have the option to extend for one year.
Paterson will not be the first international sports star to have a street named after him in the Borders.
Two years ago, former Scotland footballer Bobby Johnstone had a street named after him in his hometown of Selkirk. He played for Selkirk, Hibs and Manchester City and was the first footballer to score in successive FA Cup finals.
Bobby Johnstone Green was named after the 17-times capped inside forward.
