Cruel cat owner banned from keeping pets
A 63-YEAR-OLD woman from the Borders who tied two tiny kittens in a bin bag and threw them over a bridge has been banned from keeping animals for five years.
Maureen Mountain, previously of Hawick, was convicted at Jedburgh Sheriff Court on Friday, February 10, following a Scottish SPCA investigation.
She had previously pled guilty to abandoning two kittens in circumstances likely to cause unnecessary suffering by securing them within black bags and throwing them off a bridge in August last year.
Scotland's animal welfare charity appealed to the public for information after a dog walker found the terrified 14 week old kittens on the old railway path between Melgund Place and Linden Crescent in Hawick.
In addition to the ban, Mountain was also fined £150.
Scottish SPCA Chief Superintendent Mike Flynn said: "This was a shocking case of deliberate cruelty. As well as a ban on keeping animals, Mountain also now has a conviction for abandoning her two cats and a criminal record.
"Tying two defenceless kittens in a bag and leaving them for dead is callous beyond belief. If they hadn't been found by a lady walking her dog they wouldn't have survived as they had no food or water and a limited air supply.
"Thankfully, the kittens, who we named Midnight and Shadow, recovered from their ordeal and have both gone on to find the loving homes they deserve."
