Borders College gives everyone a Sporting Chance

A RECORD number of runners took part in an annual fundraiser in Galashiels last week. And organisers admitted this year's event, which was held on one of the hottest days of the year so far, was a scorcher!
Despite the sweltering heat, Colin McCall, a member of local running club Gala Harriers, won the 2012 Borders College 10 kilometre race round campus with a new personal best time of 36 minutes, 43.08 seconds. He led a field of 53 runners.
A total of 120 walkers, many of them sporting shades in the sunshine, also completed a five kilometre route which started and finished at Netherdale.
The event was organised by students studying sports and exercise as part of their course and, it is hoped, to have raised more than £200 for Give Them A Sporting Chance, a registered charity which gives carers and those with disabilities, of all ages, the opportunity to make their sporting or recreational dreams come true.
Programme Leader John Mullins told the Border Telegraph: "This is the first year we have opened up the event to the local community and the students have worked hard to ensure it has been a resounding success.
"The event began with only 40 people three years ago and this year 173 people took part. It has grown every year but this was the best one yet." But he added: "The weather really made it."
All runners who finished the race received a certificate, medal and t-shirt. And John thanked all the event's sponsors for their support.
John said: "We are already looking ahead to next year and would be interested in hearing from businesses who might wish to have the race renamed after them."
