TWISTS and turns as the Borders goes to the polls.

FORMER Council leader David Parker was given an overwhelming vote of confidence from the people of Leaderdale & Melrose.

The Independent candidate collected over 1300 first choices to cruise through the winning post.

He was joined by Nicholas Watson of the Borders Party and Jim Torrance of the SNP to represent the ward.

Councillor Parker told the Border Telegraph: "I am obviously delighted."

Mr Parker paid tribute to his wife, Ruth, during his victory speech.

Lib-Dem John Paton-Day failed to win his way back to Newtown St Boswells.

In the Galashiels & District ward Sandy Aitchison from the Borders Party collected the most firsts, closely followed by Bill Herd of the SNP.

They will be joined in the region's biggest ward by Independent Bill White and John Mitchell from the SNP.

In Selkirk the biggest shock was the failure of Kenneth Gunn of the SNP to hold his seat.

Conservative Michelle Ballantyne was first past the post with Lib-Dem Vicky Davidson and Independent Gordon Edgar both collecting enough votes to join her.

Michelle said: "The heart of the Conservative Party is to care, and I hope that I can help as many people as possible."

The results are being posted live on the council's website -

I'm really sorry to see Kenny Gunn disappear from frontline politics. But his legacy (and his tenacity) will long be rembered in his adopted and much loved Selkirk. And, I for one, wouldn't be be the least surprised to witness a Kenny comeback before very long.Meanwhile, good luck to him and his tireless, charity-toiling wife, Wilma.

Well done David Parker. What he's done for Lauder recently is brilliant and the people of Lauder thanked him through the ballot paper.
