BOOK bugs from all over the Borders rose to the challenge of reading six titles during the recent summer holidays.

This year the theme of the Summer Reading Challenge was 'Story Lab' and local youngsters joined Professor Cortex and his team of mad scientists on a journey of story and imagination.

In Selkirk library, this summer's reading challenge delivered a record-breaking achievement with 47 children completing all three bronze, silver and gold awards.

The children were presented with their gold medals and award certificates by none other than the mad professor himself at a special ceremony at Selkirk Library last week.

Selkirk Librarian Christine Johnston was delighted with the uptake and interest from children in this year's Summer Reading Challenge. She told the Border Telegraph: "I would like to thank all the youngsters who took part in the Story Lab Reading Challenge, and congratulate them for achieving a record breaking result at Selkirk Library."

The aim of the Summer Reading Challenge is to encourage young people to visit libraries and discover new books during the summer.

Youngsters sign up for the challenge at their local library and are invited to review and rate their books. Goodies such as scratch 'n' sniff stickers, key rings, wristbands and bookmarks are collected throughout each stage of the challenge.

Councillor Vicky Davidson, Executive Member for Culture, Sport and Community Learning at Scottish Borders Council, added: "The Summer Reading Challenge is free and inspires children aged four to 11 to read during the summer school break when there can be a decline in reading skills.

"This year's Story Lab has clearly been a great success with 47 children taking part in Selkirk alone. It is a fun way to foster their love of books and keep their enthusiasm for reading going through the summer holidays."
