FIGURES show that more than one in ten Borders smokers attempted to give up the fags last year.
High profile campaigns by both the Scottish Government and more locally the Scottish Borders Community Health Partnership have attempted to cut numbers lighting up.
Of the estimated 15,800 smokers in the region, 1657 of them sought help to quit smoking during 2013 - just above the national average of 10.3 per cent.
Although it is unknown how successful 768 of them were, follow-up reports from the region’s cessation officers show that of the 899 people who they contacted 574 had still stopped after a month with 315 giving in to the urges.
