THE A7 was closed for more than five hours on Monday following a crash at railway roadworks near Fountainhall.

Accident investigators are still trying to establish the cause of the three-vehicle collision involving a works lorry, a silver Vauxhaul car and a white Land Rover just after 9.30am.

A total of three occupants from the vehicles received injuries.

The driver of the Land Rover had to be cut from the wreckage before being rushed to hospital.

A spokeswoman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue service said: “Firefighters worked closely with colleagues in the Scottish Ambulance Service, who provided guidance as crews used hydraulic cutting gear to carefully remove the roof from one of the cars and safely extricated one male casualty.

“The man was placed in the care of paramedics who took him to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary for treatment.” Firefighters from Galashiels and Dalkeith were involved in the rescue operation.

The other two casualties were taken to Borders General Hospital for precautionary checks.

A spokesman for Police Scotland told us: “The road was blocked in both directions but re-opened at 2.45pm.”
