The child from Galashiels was pulled from a hotel swimming pool in the holiday resort of St Annes, near Blackpool, yesterday morning at 11am.

A member of the public and a member of staff at the Dalmeny Hotel attempted to revive the girl before she was rushed to the nearby Victoria Hospital in Blackpool.

She died last night at 7.55pm after being transferred to the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital.

A 40-year-old woman, also from Galashiels, was arrested and held overnight on suspicion of murder and neglect.

She remains in police custody as investigations continue this afternoon.

In the latest statement from Lancashire Police , officers state that their enquiries are ongoing.

A Home Office post mortem will take place in due course to establish the cause of death.

Detective Chief Inspector Dean Holden told the Border Telegraph: “We are treating this tragic incident as an unexplained death and are continuing to investigate just how the child has come into difficulties in the pool.

“Our thoughts remain with the child’s family at this sad time.” It is understood that the investigation is centering on whether the death was a deliberate act, negligence or a tragic accident.

And it is unlikely that the identity of the woman or the child will released until this evening at the earliest.
