CONKER champions from across Scotland had a smashing time in the Borders last weekend.

More than 100 competitors gathered at Peebles on the banks of the Tweed for the eighth annual Scottish tournament which was part of last weekend’s Tweed Valley Forest Festival.

Kate Mcluckie was crowned Junior Scottish Conker Champion with this years Border Rogue champion being Stirling’s Jamie Craigen.

The rogues competition is for a conker which has been treated by any method to make it more durable.

Jamie said that he had selected a good conker and varnished it for a few days to give him his winning edge.

Elsewhere on Tweed Green visitors to Peebles Food Festival sampled fantastic flavours from around the world thanks to many local suppliers.

A lively wood market gave people the chance to discover wonderful products from simple spoons, to toys and children’s activities, with the inclusion of sophisticated furniture which would grace any home.

The fun was not confined to Peebles with ghostly goings on at Traquair adding to the magic last weekend.

Activities extending into this week include a special festival walk at Dawyck Botanic Garden tomorrow afternoon (Thursday) to discover late autumn colour. Booking is essential on 01721 760254.
