THE Fly Fishing club at Earlston High School continues to go from strength to strength and this week it has received donations of fly fishing and fly tying equipment from Steve Cullen, editor of Total Fly Fisherman magazine, and other anglers from around the country.

The club started following a school trip to Tweedstart, at Sunlaws, Kelso.

Mr Foggin, who runs the club, is a very keen fly fisherman and has been second in the Scottish Premier Fly Fishing League for the last two years and he has also represented Scotland at the World Championships in the Czech Republic and Norway.

He said: “It’s brilliant that anglers have supported us with kind donations of tackle and fly tying equipment as starting off in angling can be quite expensive. We now have equipment that the pupils can borrow to take home if they wish.

“We have some very keen pupils and they are honing their skills to become excellent anglers and fly tiers.

“The club started a couple of years ago when we ran a trip to Tweedstart, an initiative run by Eoin Fairgrieve at Sunlaws, Kelso. It was such a success we have run further trips to Tweedstart and a trip to the Hass lochs which was kindly supported by Jedforest Angling club.

“A real highlight was just before Christmas when two of the pupils, Euan Ramage and Niall Pennington, caught specimen grayling on a trip to the River Leader, huge fish for the river which many people will try for years to catch fish as big as that.” Euan added: “We are learning lots about fishing and it is great to be able to tie our own flies at lunchtime.”
