A MAN who grew cannabis in his Galashiels home has been ordered to carry out 160 hours unpaid work at Selkirk Sheriff Court.
Police discovered seven cannabis plants worth around £1,750 as well as £900 worth of the class B drug when they raided Andrew Mercer’s home in Hill Street last December.
The 43-year-old pleaded guilty to charges of cultivating cannabis as well as possession of the drug.
Mercer’s lawyer explained his client had been a heavy cannabis smoker but had since stopped.
Sheriff John Rafferty imposed the unpaid work as a direct alternative to custody and said it has to be carried out within 12 months.
