SELKIRK is sinking, community councillors were told this week.

A broken water pipe is suspected to be to blame for the subsidence in the town’s Market Place.

However, Selkirk Commuity Council work to repair the damage has been delayed amid fears it could interfere with the town’s Common Riding celebrations.

Local Councillor Gordon Edgar, Executive Member for Roads and Infrastucture at Scottish Borders Council, said: “We are going to have to lift the whole thing up because we understand it is a broken drain or a broken water pipe.

“The problem is it is right next to where the platform is for the Common Riding.

“We don’t want to dig a hole and find we can’t fix it before the Common Riding. The Market Cross will need completely rebuilt.” The 2015 Selkirk Standard Bearer, who will lead this year’s festivities, will be unveiled outside the Town Hall next Friday, April 24, at 7pm.
