A 23-YEAR-OLD man has made a private appearance at Selkirk Sheriff Court following the discovery of a major cannabis farm in the town.

Hang Phan Vo is charged with producing cannabis  and also being concerned in the supply of a controlled drug as well a breach of the 1989 Electricity Act.

It follows a police raid on a former convenience store in Curror Street when around 500 plants, with an estimated value of £360,000, were recovered.

Various pieces of growing equipment involved in cannabis cultivation were also discovered.

Vo, of no fixed abode, made no plea or declaration and his case was continued for further examination.

He was remanded in custody by Sheriff Jamie Gilmour and his next court appearance is expected within eight days.

The cannabis farm was discovered above a vacant shop in a residential area of Selkirk - just 100 yards away from the entrance to Knowepark Primary School.

The discovery comes almost exactly a year after Scotland's largest ever cannabis farm was discovered when police seized 2,000 cannabis plants, worth £700,000 to £1.8million, from the town’s derelict Queen’s Head pub on October 28, 2014.
