THE name of new footbridge in Selkirk will be decided by Souters.

The recently opened structure, which links Bannerfield with the rest of the town, is currently called the Bridge Street Bridge.

But flood defence bosses have agreed to take forward any suggestions to have it renamed.

Flood Protection Scheme project manager Connor Price said: "If there is a strong feeling from the community I will take the name forward to Scottish Borders Council for approval.

"We would like to know if there is a strong feeling for a new name and we are open to a suggestion from Selkirk Community Council."

The Border Telegraph revealed earlier this year that the town's Fleshers' Association had proposed the new bridge being named after well-known poet, performer and community activist, Billy Stark.

The late Mr Stark was a highly successful gardener and sportsman.

Alistair Pattullo, the new chairman of Selkirk Community Council, said: "There has been a suggestion already presented to us.

"We would be happy to open this up to the public to see if there are any other suggestions."
