A BORDERS rugby club is hoping to emulate the world's richest football team by introducing its own tartan.

Committee members at Selkirk launched their very own tartan on Saturday.

And they hope the club colours will prove as popular as a similar tartan which was launched for Manchester City last year.

Selkirk president Elliot Turnbull told us: "I saw how successful the Manchester City tartan was after its launch and we thought we'd give it a try at Selkirk.

"It seems a good way to promote the club and at the same time raise some revenue."

The tartan fabric, which is in the Selkirk colours of red, white and blue with a white embroidered club crest, has been manufactured at Lochcarron of Scotland, who also produce the Manchester City tartan.

The initial run of lambswool scarves are already proving popular with over 40 sold during Saturday's home game on Saturday against Currie.

A further order of scarves will follow and there are plans to have travel rugs, ponchos and kilts made from the design.

Mr Henderson added: "The feedback at the weekend was excellent.

"People really like the tartan and I'm sure we'll sell many more in the run up to Christmas."

The Selkirk Rugby Club tartan products are available from the club shop at Philiphaugh.
