HAVE you ever asked yourself which clan ruled your area?

Or have you wondered if you descended from them?

Well Selkirk-based Lochcarron of Scotland, the world’s leading manufacturer of tartan, have created an interactive map to show which clans ruled every part of Scotland at the start of the 17th century.

Tamara Valentina from Lochcarron of Scotland told the Border Telegraph: “The map gives people the chance to see which clans ruled every part of Scotland so you can trace back if your family lived elsewhere.”

The tool allows you to click on the area you want to view and gives you a brief history of the clan, their motto and an image of the their tartan. You can then click on the link to purchase items from the online store, such as scarves and ties.

Tamara added: “We have got loads of different tartans, so we wanted to make creative content that was shareable and would engage the audience.

“We’ve been working with clan societies for a while to improve the accuracy of the map. We wanted to get it as accurate as possible.”

But designing the page didn’t come without its problems.

“We started by looking at an old clan map,” added Tamara. “It then had to be traced by hand and then be designed on the computer. It took about two months to do.

“Once the map was uploaded we had to add the pop ups which display the information about the clans and show the tartan patterns.”

The map shows that the Murray family, who ruled parts of the Borders, descended from a Flemish knight, Freskin, who was granted West Lothian in the 12th century by David I. Freskin and his sons. The Clan Chief was Bruce Murray, 12th Duke of Atholl and the motto of the group was “Tout Prest” meaning quite ready.
