WORK is set to begin on a crumbling wall in Selkirk which has forced roads bosses into operating a one-way system for almost four years.

A dispute between owners of the Glen Hotel and Scottish Borders Council over ownership has led to a lengthy stand off.

And since the start of 2013 a temporary one-way system around Buccleuch Road and Mill Street has been in place.

Middle ground was found between the two parties last year.

And an agreement was reached during the summer about ownership and footing the bill.

This week it was revealed that a team of builders are ready to start work.

Selkirkshire councillor Michelle Ballantyne said: "The contractors are on stand by. There is one legal document still to be signed and then we are good to go.

"Once the wall is repaired the two-way traffic system will return."

During the wall repairs it is also hoped to cut back foliage from the upper parts of Yarrow Terrace ahead of the road reopening to two-way traffic.

No timescale has been placed on the repairs.

Fellow Selkirk councillor Gordon Edgar added: "As soon as the document is signed the workmen will be on site."
