DRIVERS in Selkirk face disruption in the new year after roads bosses revealed a carriageway will be completely closed to allow for wall repairs.

As revealed last month in the Border Telegraph, work will begin on the controversial Glen Wall on Yarrow Terrace in January.

A dispute between owners of the Glen Hotel and Scottish Borders Council over ownership had led to a lengthy stand off.

And since May 2013 a temporary one-way system around Buccleuch Road and Mill Street has been in place.

An agreement was reached earlier in the autumn.

This week Scottish Borders Council confirmed repairs will start next month at a cost of around £100,000.

But they also revealed Yarrow Terrace will be closed to all traffic during the initial stages of repairs.

A spokesman told us: "Yarrow Terrace will be closed to all traffic at the location of the retaining wall.

"Alternative traffic management arrangements will be put in place during this time and further detailed information will be issued early in the new year."

The entire works are expected to last around 10 weeks.

The completion of the works will allow the reopening of the northbound lane of Yarrow Terrace, which has been cordoned off to motorists for safety reasons while negotiations about the wall continued.

Selkirkshire councillor Gordon Edgar, who is responsible for roads and infrastructure, told us: "This has been a long standing issue but it was important that an agreeable resolution was found for all parties.

“We understand the considerable disruption caused to local people while negotiations have been ongoing and thank them for their patience.

“Once the work on the wall is completed, the temporary one-way system will be removed and Yarrow Terrace will return to a two-way road.”

Officials from the local authority are attempting to track down the owners of land above the Glen Wall so that foliage can be cut back to reinstate pavement.
